Beauty and the Prince Chapter: 30

His grandmother looked up at him as he stepped into her study. She gestured for him to come over and sit on the chair across her. Kotoko laid down the newspaper she had in her hand aside, on the stack of newspapers that mounted her desk.

Derek felt his heart sink at the picture on the front. He could see the fear drenched on his face, looking hysterical, fending people off as he tried to protect Adelaide’s face.

He looked away.

Kotoko, as if having read his mind, turned the paper over and signalled Gerard to take them away.

Derek tried to settle himself in the seat, feeling awkward having screamed at his grandmother the night before.

“...did you find out how it happened?” he ventured nervously, momentarily meeting Kotoko’s eyes before diverting it to his hands.

She let out a sullen sigh, “Unfortunately no,” she took off her glasses and let them hang on her neck.

He quickly looked up, “Surely... not yet?” he added, hopeful.

Kotoko’s eyebrows drew close to each other, making him feel even more uneasy. She reclined into her chair in deep thought; she slightly shook her head, “I don’t know...” she said slowly. She looked at him in the eyes, “in the years of taking care of this kind of attention from the media, ones who have been interested in you,” she paused in puzzlement, “I’ve never met with such a situation...”

Derek felt the blood pulsating in his veins, suddenly reminded how her ‘taking care of things’ had never been perfect but it had always meant that he was never in harm’s way.

“What does that mean?” he carefully masked his anger.

“All this while, I’ve always found ways,” she muttered to herself, “I was always aware of how information leaked... location, pictures-

“W-wait, what?”

Kotoko gave him a defeated smile, “My dear,” she chuckled to his surprise, but it was quite a grimly one. He quietly observed his grandmother, feeling confused.

“If it is a matter such as public interest,” she began, “...then no money in the world could suppress such a force”

Her smile was only met with his frown.

“Knowing this, I have found ways to control the situation; adapt... and to a certain extent, used it for our family’s best interest”

“Wha...” he couldn’t formulate a sentence. He didn’t know whether it was the information itself or his grandmother’s candour that had taken him aback.

“I don’t expect you to understand the way these things work now” she looked at him intently, “...as you yourself will fully comprehend and embrace what being a Didier truly means,” she said, disregarding his discovery on the matter mentioned not a second ago.

“My main concern now, is Adelaide’s safety.”

That reminder calmed him a little amidst the new light he received of the media’s relationship with his family.

“As I said, I have always had control over the situation...I’ve even made plans on how to publicise your relationship in the future,” she said nonchalantly to his discomfort, “But this had caught me totally unawares,” she stated, still calculating how it happened.

“I’ve people investigating this matter thoroughly,” she glanced at Gerard and he gave Derek a reassuring nod.

“Obaasan...” Derek wished he could express his dissatisfaction at that but as he tried to see it clearly, he saw that his grandmother had already told him what he knew. Dreadfully, he had to accept that there was nothing that could be done at the moment.

Kotoko gazed at Derek, understanding his reaction, “Patience...” was all she could say to soothe him.

“Now, I need to get ready,” she said standing up.

“Where are you going?”

Kotoko sighed, “The media frenzy last night,” she said walking around her desk, “It caused quite a stir; something Bolshevik’s frail heart couldn’t take”

“You’re meeting Anja’s father?”

Kotoko looked at him as if he had said something stupid.

“Darling, why would a strapping man like that need tending to?” she scoffed, “No, it is her grandfather,” she began to tut, “I tell you, that man had always been too weak to face things, it amazes me how he’s come to where he is now.”

Derek knew where this was going; Kotoko was about to break off on a rant, about his grandfather’s glory days. He quickly stood,

“I’m going to see if Adelaide needs anything”

Kotoko looked at him for a second. She nodded, “Yes, that is best. She had a hard time”

Derek bowed his head and turned to the door. Not knowing whether he should be furious or relieved after what his grandmother had shared.

He found Adelaide sitting under the tree near Didier Lake. It was the same tree that they had first shared what he would term a ‘friendly exchange’ that one night. He realised that they both seemed to have an affinity towards said tree.

As if she had sensed his presence, she looked at his direction. She smiled at him, her eyes narrowed a little and the soft breeze blew in her hair; making her the perfect imagery of calm and serenity. His chest tightened as a wishful thought passed; that Adelaide wasn’t as perceptive as she had consistently proved to be...

“...you okay?” she asked as he sat next to her.

He tried to mask his feelings with a smile but a surge of dread welled up deep inside him, and his mouth drew a tight line; he did not want to lie to her.

She turned away and laid her head on his shoulder, looking at the lake. The strings that tugged his heart loosened a bit but her conceding attitude trumped his wishful thought from before. He felt her reaching for his hand and clasped hers in it.

“Don’t think too much,” she said softly, stroking her thumb over his hand.

He looked down at her and their eyes met.

“Like this,” she said, a small smile crept up her face, “as long as I can see you,” she looked down at their hands, “hold your hand,” she returned her eyes to gaze up at him, “as long as I’m with you,” her smiled widened, almost squinting her eyes, “I’m happy.”

His desire to kiss her never matched the one he had at that moment.

He closed his eyes, holding her face in his hand as he wished that kiss would never end, wishing that moment would go on, so he could be surrounded by her warmth, by her scent; so that he could be with her.

As they parted, their eyes met and they looked into each other in silence.

The smile that simultaneously appeared on each of their faces signified what was understood between them. He felt the ease swoop into him, embracing his heart warmly and he blew a long sigh, as if having to breathe again after a long time.

He looked at their hands, hers in his.

“I’d always thought,” he paused, “that my being tailed around by the media,” he chuckled in bewilderment, “...I had believed that it was my grandmother’s lack of awareness; just how the media works and what needs to be done, etcetera” he grimaced, suddenly embarrassed.

Adelaide looked at him, listening intently.

He chuckled awkwardly, looking away, “Who knew...” he pursed his lips for a moment.

“What is it?”

Derek shook his head, “Nothing,” he smiled, “She’s just more efficient than I thought she was...”

Adelaide nodded her head slowly, turning back to the lake.

“...we’re all like that,” she sighed, “when you love someone; you naturally want to take care of them. And because you love them, you do it so well-too well that they don’t notice it” she paused, looking up at him, “when you love someone, some things come so naturally that our loved ones don’t have to know that something good is happening... as long as that good is happening, that’s enough.”

“You’re grandmother once told me that you don’t share your problems with her,” she shrugged, “Naturally she could only continue and do her best in handling things she knew how to...”

Derek laughed.

“A case of no feed-back then?”

Adelaide scrunched her nose at that, “Yeah. A tutor who doesn’t give constructive feed-back and a diligent student who goes through the whole syllabus without consult” she rolled her eyes at him placating her.

He kissed her on the forehead, “I understand...” he chuckled, enjoying that he’d teased her.

A sigh suddenly escaped him.

“We still don’t know how last night happened”

They looked at each other for a moment.

“And the fact that obaasan’s concerned...”

Adelaide cupped her hand on the side of his face, pulling it to her direction.

“I’m here” she looked into his eyes, “I’m here” she repeated.

Derek chuckled, she was so adorable.

He nodded his head showing he understood until he felt her hand on his chest, “here?”

He looked at her confused.

“What about here?” she asked, “Am I here?” she tapped his chest again.

“Because,” she held her hand to her chest, “You are”

He felt the temperature rise on his face.

“So tell me Mr. Didier,” she narrowed her eyes at him, adopting a more whimsical tone of voice, “Are we on the same page?”

Derek couldn’t help but laugh. He reached in and kissed her.

“About that?”

She nodded her head.

“Forever.”

Chelsea was busy staring at her phone, texting in frenzy, smiling happily. I had a straw in my mouth, slurping whatever that was left of the soda I could find, looking at her distractedly. She had been very occupied with her phone lately.

“Who are you texting?” I narrowed my eyes at her.

She looked up at for a second and shrugged, “Just... A friend.”

I paused.

Chelsea was seeing someone.

“Chels, who is it?”

“I told you, a friend” she repeated, thumbs still furiously clicking on the keypads.

I somehow felt horrible.

“Chels-

Chelsea put her phone to the side. We both looked up at Stacy Strauss’ face, gleaming in a strange satisfied smile.

“Hiya Stace. How are you?” Chelsea beamed. It had been a while since she showed up to pester us after Derek and I were officially together.

Strauss pretended she didn’t hear.

“So, I see Derek has returned to his ways” she smiled, arms folded.

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?” Chelsea quickly asked.

She tossed something on the table before us.

The glossy cover of the tabloid magazine shone under the light.

“I heard Anja Bolshevik’s in town,” she tapped her finger on the cover page.

I looked down to see a horrible picture of Derek shielding me from the cameras, ‘Bolshevik under Didier’s cloak? Exclusive on their doomed romance!’

There were other snippets of them together all over the page.

Pictures from their past.

“I gotta admit, I was close to admiring you McNealy” Stacy pretended to be sad, “I thought it was amazing that someone like you had that kind of hold on Derek Didier” she sneered at Chelsea, looking behind at her cronies, before returning her gaze at me, “Turns out logic beat you at it”

“You don’t even know what you’re talk-

“It’s normal to want to stick to your own breed. I can’t blame him” Strauss interrupted Chelsea.

“So you came just to tell me this?” I said slowly, before Chelsea tore Strauss’ face.

“I understand that you’d want to keep your pride,” Strauss nodded in a pretentious way, “I mean, it’s not every day that you have a prince drive you around in his carriage now do you?” she chuckled.

“Word of advice, you better keep an ounce of respect for yourself” she scrunched her nose condescendingly, “Dump the guy,” she insisted, “Okay?”

I had never desired so much to kill someone as I did when Strauss decided to rear her ugly head earlier. It was Chelsea who held me to my seat. Strauss was of course oblivious to it-as she was with everything. I raked through my brain thinking what had caused things to develop in that angle. Anja and Derek had finished eons ago and tying that up between the two, wasn’t that like going beyond grasping for straws?

God. What was I doing trying to figure the media? They could produce an offspring out of a giraffe and a human being and that would sell like hot cakes too. As long as someone would believe it. I stared down the tabloid in my hands. So people would believe in this too? Was it more plausible than the truth?

I felt my heart sank. Was it not plausible that Derek and I were together? The whole school knew that we come to school together. The whole of IH would be enough to make a quarter of Ibruen’s population.

I shook my head. I never cared what other people thought, it wasn’t time to start now.

I just needed to see Derek again, I thought, quickly stuffing the thing under my jacket.

I was walking so fast, my hair started getting in my face. I combed them back exasperatedly only to knock myself into someone.

The magazine slid from under my jacket and I bent over to get it when the person before me grabbed it in his hand.

“Tha..nks...”

I pursed my lips as Ian examined the front cover.

“This was from that night” he murmured to himself.

I scoffed, “Come on, get it out of your system”

Ian peered at my face through his dark hair.

“This isn’t anything I haven’t warned you about Adelaide”

I felt my chest heave. That stung more than I had expected. Perhaps the fact that he hadn’t made light of it only showed that my insecurities were not exactly baseless.

He flipped through the magazine, "...the fact that you held onto this,” he paused, “shows me, that, that tough act you put on all this time might had just been that” he looked up at me, “An act.”

I couldn’t hear any of it anymore, I chose to walk away, I really wanted to see Derek. I needed to see him right at that moment.

“Adelaide, stop” Ian caught my hand. I pulled away but he held my hand firmly in his.

“Let. Go.” I said, not looking at him.

“You’re from two different worlds” he reminded me, tearing the already gaping wound, “And the world will make sure that it stays that way”

“It may be Anja now but there will be others more.”

“Don’t be naive to think you could change that... it is you against the world”

“If you think this hurts now,”

“... you’re in for much worst.”

“I promise”

I whipped my hand away from him.

“Then what do you suggest I do?!” I spat, helplessly wiping the tears away but they’ve decided to flow and I couldn’t stop them now.

“How do you suppose I could just turn off the way I feel for Derek?” I was really crying now, the sobs coming out between words.

“THIS” I hit my hand against my chest.

“This isn’t something you could just switch on and off!”

“I love him” I told him to what look like surprise on his face.

“So even if there were a hundred more Anja’s coming,”

“No matter how the world hates to see us together,”

“...it takes a whole lot more for me to stop” I sobbed,

“and I won’t stop now”

I started running. Running so fast I couldn’t see anything around me. I heard my heart beat in my ears. I felt the ache subside. And Derek came to view. And I ran into him and clung onto him as if my life depended on it.

“What’s wrong?” I heard him say.

“Hold me” was all I said as I cried in his arms.

The old basketball court behind the gym was barren as always. I think they were going to replace it with some other sport arena but never got around to doing it just yet. So it just stayed there, near to being dilapidated, the paint chipping off everywhere and the colours on the benches faded with time. I could hear the patter of rain against the roof above us and also the steady rhythm of Derek’s heart. I finally stopped crying, wiping my eyes for the hundredth time, looking up at Derek as he held me in his arms. He didn’t ask again, what had upset me to that degree. He just stayed there with me, as we bailed the next period-and perhaps the rest of the day.

I think I have been putting off thinking about a lot of things since I realised my feelings for Derek. Like how I barely know what’s going on in Chelsea’s life or that I was getting married in short span of time. I love Derek sure, but I was going to turn 18 and already have this promised to me. I have also put off thinking about the fact what all that implies. I imagined it. But I never thoroughly thought about it. And how was convincing Ian going to help when I needed convincing myself? Will I be just as strong to put up with all romantic rumours? One has already left me battered to this state.

Will loving Derek be enough? That alone?

I missed Chelsea. She’s seeing someone and I didn’t even know how or when it happened. And that aggravated me the most. The only best friend I have and I know naught.

“It seems...” Derek’s voice pulled me out of my reverie; I turned my attention to him. He smiled, knowing that I had gone far off into my own thoughts, “It seems,” he repeated, cupping the side of my face, “That we are not alone with our problems, are we?”

I sighed my agreement, pouting at the fact that he could read me well now. It just reminded me that only Chelsea knew how to do that...

“Are we ready to talk about it?” he tried, tracing his finger against my face as he tucked a strand hair behind my ear.

I pulled my mouth to one corner, my lips pursed.

He nodded his head, “I understand” he conceded albeit his disappointment.

I looked up at him apologetically, giving him a peck on the lips.

“Sorry.”

He smiled a sad smile, “all in good time” he said wistfully.

I wrapped my arms around his waist, squeezing him tight.

“Love you”

He chuckled, kissing my forehead.

I ran my hands through my hair, tiredly looking at the empty living room. Derek walked from behind, hugging me from behind as he planted a kiss on top of my head. I smiled, experiencing the mixture of relish and guilt of spending the day ditching classes for the first time. I needed it, I remember Derek reminded me repeatedly earlier.

“I’m gonna go take a shower. I probably won’t see you later for dinner”

I whipped around to look at him, not hiding my disappointment.

He seemed pleased at the reaction.

“You have company” he said to my confusion. He glanced at my room and smiled, “Go, it’s not polite to keep people waiting”

He kissed me briefly as he turned away and disappeared into his room. I stared at the closed double doors for a moment before hesitantly going to my room.

I opened the doors to find Chelsea playing with Dory on my bed.

We looked at each other in silence.

I had to bite back the laugh that was about to escape me. Derek’s ability to read me was starting to scare me a bit.

“Are you okay?” Chelsea asked, momentarily distracted as she saw Misty run out of the room.

I left the door ajar as I heard Derek’s door open and close. Misty has been moving to and fro between us since we’ve lived here.

I held my breath as I walked to her.

Chelsea had tears in her eyes.

“I was starting to wonder when you were about to implode with everything that’s been happening!”

“But I thought you were happy with the whole Derek thing” I pouted, wiping my eyes.

She rolled her eyes, “You’re such a dolt Adds,” she laughed, “You shouldn’t try to keep things only to yourself, that’s what I’m here for”

“Hey, you kept things from me too!”

She bit her tongue in embarrassment, “Yeah..., no that was all very incidental” she said waving the whole Frank thing away.

“An older man” I said narrowing my eyes at her.

She sighed, “I know,” she frowned, “Unknown territory”

I snorted, “Just enjoy it,” I giggled at the prospect of her actually liking someone for a change. “Though I am worried all the same,” I admitted, looking at her.

“I get what you mean,” she nodded, hugging her knees, “I never know if this is just friendship-

“an odd one” I added,

“Yes, that” she laughed, “I mean, it’s not that bad, we’re only like... 5 years apart”

“Must still be hard though?”

She nodded, thinking.

She looked at me, “I’m sorry, for keeping things from you. It just seemed like you didn’t need the extra stress”

I leaned in and hugged her tight, “I missed you”

Chelsea patted my back, “And I was just starting to miss your neediness”

We both laughed. And I felt the weight of the world halved and my heart floated a little more freely.

Chelsea and I had dinner in the suite, watching old movies and had the kind of fun I nearly forgot we used to have. She was just texting Frank good night, sitting on the right side of the bed, her back against the head board. Things were definitely changing and it was time I embraced it. I untied my hair, having finished washing up. Chelsea smiled up at me shyly as she sent whatever she had meant to say to Frank before placing her phone on the nightstand. I smiled. At least the important things remained, I thought to myself.

I was just about to get under the covers when Chelsea bounded up from her relaxed posture.

“What?”

She slapped her forehead in exasperation.

“I’ve an assignment due tomorrow!”

I widened my eyes at her, “Whe-where’s your bag?”

Chelsea also thought the same as she shut her eyes in an irate manner.

“Ugh, I think I left it in the car Derek called to drive here”

I glanced at the clock on my desk.

It was already a few minutes past midnight. I turned to Chelsea, “Is it really important?”

Chelsea’s face was white, “Err... yeah, like I’m going to be served for breakfast kind of important” she started to hit herself in the head, “I meant to finish it up here”

I felt a pang of guilt hit me. If it wasn’t for me, she would’ve finished it at home already.

“Right,” I said, biting my lower lip, “Uhh... do you remember who drove you here?”

Chelsea paused, “Y-yeah, I think it was that Jim guy”

I nodded my head, “Okay, wait here”

“H-hey where are you going?”

“I’m gonna go get your bag for a sec”

“N-no, it’s late! I don’t want to trouble anybody-

I scoffed, “Best friend code” I reminded her.

“I’ll go with you” she volunteered.

“Don’t worry about it, I know this place like the back of my hand, it won’t take long” I assured her, putting on my house slippers.

Chelsea had no choice but let me go.

I was lucky that Tim was still working the elevator so he told me where Jim was. As I told Chelsea, it didn’t take 5 minutes before I had her bag in my hands; Jim was on guard duty near Didier lake. He seemed embarrassed seeing me only in my PJs. I laughed it off and bid him good night as I made my way back to the house.

“What are you doing walking around this time of night?”

I froze.

It was Ian.

I flinched at the memory of him seeing me cry earlier.

I ignored him and continued walking to the elevator.

“Hey,” I felt him grab my arm.

I turned around, looking at his hand.

He slowly let go.

“I...” he ducked his head, “I apologise, for earlier”

I balked at that.

He looked back up in my face, “I understand I was harsh”

I narrowed my eyes. Did he have some kind of a Hyde-Jekyll thing going on or something?

“But I maintain that nothing I said was wrong” he added, a little more sternly this time.

Ah. There it is.

“Sorry, I don’t ever remember having to answer to you” I said walking away.

“No, Adelaide,” he caught my wrist and I whipped it out of his hand just as quickly.

“STAY AWAY FROM M-

I jumped at the sight of him collapsing before my eyes.

I gasped as his body started to convulse, his eyes rolling to the back of his head. I fell on my knees, not knowing what to do. I started screaming hysterically as Ian stopped moving and lay still before my eyes.

I held the fringes of the run laid out on the table. I looked up and saw myself in the mirror. A girl with green eyes stared back at me, blinking her eyes. The emerald locket dangling on my neck mirrored those eyes. Why did that happen I wonder?

I turned to the gentle hand on my shoulder. Derek looked at me,

“Are you okay?”

I dabbed my eyes, laughing, “Yeah, eyeliner does that” I turned away, looking at the mirror checking if I had smudged it. Derek held my shoulders; he kissed the back of my neck,

“You look beautiful” I could feel his breath on my skin as he sighed. I felt a blush creeping up my face; I quickly turned away until he caught me and turned me to face him. A familiar smile crept up his face and I felt my stomach flip. He held my chin, pulling me up close to his face. He locked me in his gaze. His eyes were to die for. How many times could I say that until I truly get used to it? Probably never; I closed my eyes, subtly muffling a gulp. He pressed his lips against mine. It felt like my heart had stopped. I could never get used to his kisses either. I felt his hands touch the skin on my back; I half cursed the backless dress I wore then and half indulged the feeling of his touch sending tingles down my spine. He pulled me closer to him. I could never get used to this either. I think I shuddered at one point but it was muffled by the gentle caress of his lips against mine. It was like a language only the two of us knew. One move led to another, another move led to the next. Like a slew of words linked with each other to form sentences. Everything was needed for this conversation to work. Everything.

“Young Mas-...

Our conversation was interrupted and like that time in exams, you’re writing that essay and you needed one last word to finish; Derek pecked me on the lips before he turned to see a very uncomfortable looking Gerard.

“What is it?” Derek asked, nonchalant.

“Well,” Gerard cleared his throat, too embarrassed to look at me, “The car, sir. The car is ready...”

“Very good,” Derek nodded his head, “ah, which limo are we going to take?”

“Limo?”

He turned to me, “I’m not driving tonight,” Derek took hold of my hand, “Shall we?” he smiled. Something told me that his eagerness had nothing to do with being chauffeured to the ball. I might just get a heart attack... just to see him excited every chance he gets to hold me.

We saw Kotoko leave with her own limo; we caught her waving at us before she disappeared from view. I could feel Derek’s hand gripping mine in anticipation. I couldn’t help but laugh. He was being silly. But I loved him that way. It was a side I barely get to see. And what I loved most was that he was being silly because of me. God forbid, a moment of conceit.

I giggled as I settled in my seat. The door closed and we sat close together. We had the whole space to ourselves. The chauffer wouldn’t know what on earth was happening back there. I somehow understood the excitement. I couldn’t help but laugh to myself. I didn’t know Derek had this side in him. Thrill-chaser, I scoffed in my mind.

“You should stop dressing up like this, you’re driving me crazy” he sighed, holding my face up to his.

“Well,” I smiled, “You know, I could just wear my hoodie to this ball if you want me to” my eyes started to blink rapidly. He was too close. His eyes. They were too dizzying up close. I felt him brush his lips against mine,

“David could dress you up in dish rags for all I care,” he chuckled, kissing me, “I’d lose my mind all the same...”

“Now, that just contradicts your first state-

He stopped me before I finished that sentence. That was his point. It didn’t make sense to him either. Neither did it to me. But the fact remains; we simply wanted each other.

“Now that’s a sight”

Derek and I pulled away from each other. We were too engrossed in each other to even realise that the limo hadn’t moved since we got in. There was a third passenger. Ian looked at us with a wry smile,

“Couldn’t keep your paws off her, eh Derek?”

“I didn’t know Obaasan arranged for you to follow us” Derek didn’t move an inch from his seat.

“Follow you?” Ian laughed, “You’re really something,” he scoffed, “Come on, scoot. You’re getting in the way”

Derek narrowed his eyes at him, “You’re really bad at reading people aren’t you?” he sneered. He reluctantly gave in, patting me on the knee. I moved to a seat near the other end and Derek followed after.

“I should say the same for you two,” Ian sniggered, “You’re avoiding me like a plague” he pouted, pretending to be hurt.

“Well. You sorta are” I crossed my arms, feeling a little deflated with the interruption.

Ian laughed, “Good job Derek, she’s sounding more and more like you”

I looked away. I didn’t really mean for him to hear me. I was just too frustrated then. I sighed looking out of the window. There was a generous amount of time before he arrived where I had forgotten his existence. Way to put a damper on someone’s mood.

“I don’t want to humour you Ian, not tonight” I heard Derek say.

Ian laughed to himself; “Come on you two, what’s with the melodrama?” he scoffed then paused. “Hey, you know what I just realised?”

Derek and I sighed in chorus. There was no stopping this guy.

“This is Anja’s ball!”

“I’m glad you actually remember where you’re going this time,” Derek chided.

“No, don’t you see?” I could make out the sly grin creeping up his face in the darkness, “You’re bringing your fiancé to your ex-girlfriend’s ball!” Ian chortled.

“That’s enough out of you” Derek said slowly, his body, tense.

I held his hand in mind, squeezing it. He ran his thumb on the back of my hand, sighing.

“What’s gotten into you? You used to be-

“Stupid,” Derek finished Ian’s sentence, looking sternly at him,

“What-

“Stupid for having had too many idiots in my life,” Derek quickly interjected him, “... people I realise that I could do without” he turned away, “but they’re not in my life anymore, the ones that wised up anyway...”

I turned to look up at Derek. He pursed his lips, his jaws taut, looking out of the window. I felt bad for some reason. But it didn’t seem like the right time to say anything. And even if it was, I don’t think there was anything I could say to make him feel better; assuming he was sad of course. Maybe I was just making myself worry about nothing but there was something about what he just said... it broke my heart.

Ian didn’t say anything. He returned to the darkness and kept quiet for the entire journey. The limo stopped.

Derek turned to me and smiled, “You ready?”

I smiled in return. We moved to the door at the other end as Ian walked out of the door nearest to his seat. I felt the slight chill envelope me as I stepped out of the vehicle. There were vast steps leading up to a decadent building. I frowned, suddenly hit with an immense amount of tension. I looked around. The silence was ominous.

I felt Derek’s hand on my back, drawing me in closer. He was being protective. He sensed the same peculiarity too. I turned to look at Ian. His eyebrows were drawn together. For the first time, we were all in the same boat.

There was a sound. Like a repetitive tapping against marble. We looked around to find the source. It was getting louder and louder by the second.

Footsteps.

Voices.

We all looked up to see a wave of people rolling down the steps. They came from all sides. It was all a blur. Before I could make out any faces, Derek had pulled me into his arms hiding me under his jacket. I could hear the sound of camera shutters going a million miles an hour. I heard Derek’s name being called by a hundred different people.

They were all fierce, all rabid, all hungry.

“MR. DIDIER! MR. DIDIER!!!”

“How could this happen?” I heard Derek say under his breath, “Did you know about this?” I assumed he was asking Ian. Derek held me close to himself, pulling me to follow him. I just held onto him, shutting my eyes, never having felt so scared in my life.

“DEREK! DEREK!!! ONE QUESTION!”

“MR. DIDIERRR!!!!”

“MR. DIDIER, WHO IS THAT YOU’RE HIDING?!!!”

I felt my stomach turn at that. Because a million more asked the same.

“STAND BACK!!!” Derek bellowed.

That would have normally shot people to cower away but like an infection to an open wound, the situation festered as I felt the heat of the crowd sucking us in. I felt my hear t race, I really didn’t know what was going on.

I screamed as a large sweaty hand grabbed me by the arm, yanking me away from Derek. I cried out at the pain, the pressure that person had inflicted on my arm was too much. I tried as hard as I can to pull my arm back but the person persisted in pulling me the other way.

I heard Derek scream all kinds of blasphemy. Derek struggled to push him away and still keep me in his arms.

The person grew even more aggressive.

“Come out now, give us a smile”

“LET GO OF HER!”

I clung onto Derek’s body with one arm because the man wouldn’t let go. I felt Derek’s shirt dampening with my tears. I couldn’t stop crying. I was so scared.

I felt another hand creep around my waist.

“Give us a smillleee~” a shrill of laughter came from the crowd.

I screamed and screamed, until my lungs felt like they were going to explode.

I suddenly heard the sound of someone’s jaw crunch.

And the alien hands disappeared.

“THERE’S IAN VON KIRK!!!” one of them shouted.

“VON KIRK PUNCHED THE GUY!”

A thousand shutters clicked at the same time.

I felt my stomach fall.

“MR. VON KIRK, WHO IS THAT GIRL WITH MR. DIDIER?!!!”

A thousand more buzzed the same inquiry.

We somehow managed to push our way through, getting back to the limo. Derek had to shove me into the limo before he quickly hopped in. Ian scrambled right after, locking the door. We all panted, looking at each other. Ian hit the barrier between us and the chauffeur,

“DRIVE!!!” he wheezed.

“What the hell’s going on?!” he gasped, looking back at the mob.

Derek looked at Ian. He seemed flustered. I understood why. It was clear to both of us that Ian had nothing to do with this.

“I THOUGHT YOU HAD TAKEN CARE OF THIS!!!” Derek screamed through the phone. I squeezed his hand. I didn’t approve of him speaking to his grandmother like that. I heard the old woman hiss at the other end.

“Of course I’m angry! I’m furious! What if they caught a picture of Adelaide?!” he screamed again. I looked away. I was feeling slightly battered myself. I glanced at Ian. He was exhausted too. I shook my head in disbelief. Those reporters were vicious.

“Obaasan, you’re missing my point here” Derek said, softly now, “No,” he sighed, “No that is not what I meant” he glanced at me before turning to look forward, “Obaasan,” he paused, “Somebody could’ve gotten hurt”

I felt Derek squeezing my hand.

“Yes,” he sighed, “Alright, okay,” he looked at me again, “Good bye.”

“What did your grandmother say?” Ian suddenly asked.

Derek looked down at his phone, “She’s looking into it,” he replied, still upset.

“...you don’t think Anja had anything to do with it?”

He looked up at Ian, “What are you suggesting?”

Ian shrugged, “You can’t rule it out-

“Wait, you’re saying she planned this?”

“Maybe... maybe not. I’m just wondering”

“Derek,” he turned to look at me, I could see the gears turning, he was going to blow, “Look, it’s okay”

“NO IT’S NOT OKAY!!!”

“Hey, calm down” Ian sounded irritated.

“Someone could’ve seen you!” Derek looked at me and shook his head, “Snapped a photo of you...” he murmured, “Do you know what that could mean? I-I...” he kept on shaking his head, “Something could’ve happened to you”

“But nothing did, Derek” I held his face in my hand; it was very warm, he was really furious. I sighed, “I’m okay...”

“I can’t believe Anja did this-

“Hey, you don’t know that,” I looked at him in the eyes, “You can’t be sure of anything now.”

He held my hand in his. I was relieved to see him finally calming down. It was overwhelming to see him react that way. I understood where he was coming from. A picture of me could be the impetus of a scandal which would be the least of his worries... some people just bear very ill wishes of you. I smiled up at him, just couldn’t wait to get back and rest. I sat back and looked up. The lights outside drew stars on the ceiling. There is an undeniable difference between our worlds. For the first time, Ian’s words rang true.

I felt Derek’s chest rise and fall. The lounge was silent, only the sound of our quiet breathing could be heard. We were lying in each other’s arms on the sofa, the TV was on but it was on mute. I don’t know how long we had stayed like that. Something had changed after that incident. The silence enveloped the room but it seemed like this silence was the bane of what crept under the surface. Like a monster lurking in the shadows and already being vulnerable as we were in the dark, we were also blindfolded. I looked up at Derek. He was staring into space; the frown on his face hadn’t worn off since earlier.

Derek wanted to wait until Kotoko returned from the ball. He said he wouldn’t be able to rest until he received word from her. I didn’t know how to help him. I hated feeling so useless.

Especially when the problem centred on me.

“I love you” I sighed, burrowing my face on the side of his chest.

His hand reached to touch my face. I looked up at him. He had the saddest look on his face. I edged closer to him, “stop it...” I begged, hating how sad he was. He blinked his eyes a few times, just studying my face for a while. He held my chin up and kissed me.

“That’s impossible,” he sighed, running his knuckles along the side of my face “because that would mean to stop loving you.”

I turned to the side, laying my head against his chest.

“Well,” I paused, “you could use a break, if you’re just going to be this gloomy all the time”

He burst out laughing.

I smiled and kissed him. That's more like it I thought, looking at him laugh. I hugged him tight and closed my eyes. I didn't know what was going to happen or whether something was happening now, but the thought that we were there for each other comforted me.

Chelsea looked down at her phone. The last text sent from the person she was meeting that afternoon was still in view. She smiled, a tiny smile, suppressing the muscles on her face that so wanted to widen that smile a few inches more across her face. She never felt this way. Feeling so thrilled but anxious at the same time, so conscious of what she was wearing, how she had done her hair that day... how normal 18-year olds should feel when meeting someone they like. But the thing was; this was the first time Chelsea was reacting this way to this situation. She’s gone on dates before sure, perhaps she wouldn’t go as far as calling them dates considering they were more like meetings where she respectfully declined people. At least acknowledging their courage to confess their feelings... but it came to a point where it was almost autonomous.

But this was different. She was sure.

Exactly how she was certain was a mystery. It brought her to think about Adelaide, her best friend. About how she, under a delicate circumstance came into an arranged marriage and under its dire likelihood, managed to develop feelings for Derek Didier, her husband to-be. Chelsea remembered just how much her best friend had despised him and yet... those two fell for each other.

She wondered if she too was lucky like them.

She still remembered the first time she met him.

Gerard, the butler who works for the Didiers let her in Derek’s quarters. It was their engagement ball and she was invited. She had felt out of place then, although she never showed it. Her best friend was dealing with adjusting to her new life and Chelsea chose to be that rock Adelaide could cling to whenever she needed her.

Servants whizzed by her, one by one carrying bottles and jars in their arms; they looked like beauty products. The Didiers were loaded; everybody who had access to TV knew that. But to see this up close and personal intimidated her. And every time something like this hit her, she reflected how Adelaide was facing them a hundred times much worst.

Chelsea smiled to Gerard as he led her into Adelaide’s room. The old man avoided getting in the way of more servants coming in and out of the room. He cleared his throat,

“I’m afraid Miss Adelaide is currently...not quite available” he chuckled, referring to the crowd buzzing around in the walk-in closet across them. She could hardly believe Adelaide was even there.

“That’s fine!” she was actually disappointed.

“I shall personally prepare you something from the kitchen, what would you like?” the friendly man offered.

“Oh I really don’t want to impose” but she was actually quite grateful, at least there was something to do. Besides, she was sure he was referring to the kitchen within the quarters itself so it was hardly any trouble at all.

“No, I insist” he smiled warmly.

“Well, anything is fine,” she replied, shrugging, “Thanks a lot Gerard”

The old man bowed his head, “Ah and I took the liberty of asking someone to bring you some magazines to look through,” he glanced at the closet, “I doubt Miss Adelaide would be finished anytime soon”

Chelsea held the frown, though it was nice of him to do that, she didn’t really like the idea of her loitering there, “That’s very nice of you, thank you”

“On a second thought, I should also ring for some snacks, would that be okay too?”

Chelsea smiled up at him and nodded. The more things he was doing to entertain her, the more disheartened she felt. She realised that this big change for Adelaide’s life would mean some changes were bound to happen with their friendship too. She didn’t want to be selfish and voice out these petty things to Adelaide. Adelaide was having it harder than she was, what she could at least do was be there for her.

She sighed, sitting down on a sofa near the walk-in, looking at Gerard leave the room.

Gerard was such a nice man. She was grateful that Adelaide was surrounded by nice people like him. She was sure there was someone to take care of her then. She sighed, placing her bag on her lap and took a peep at the dress she had brought for the ball.

She wasn’t sure all of the sudden.

She didn’t want to embarrass Adelaide...

A hand appeared and fished for her dress.

“You’ve got taste,”

Chelsea looked up at the man who was holding her dress in his hand, he turned to look at her, “-this colour suits your hair perfectly”

The man squinted when he smiled. It was a warm smile.

Gerard came back with a tray carrying a glass and a jug, “Ah, I seemed to have missed you Mr. Donogue”

“I enjoy surprising people,” the man raised his eyebrows playfully before laughing.

Chelsea wondered how old the guy was. He couldn’t have been older than 30. Perhaps in his late 20’s? She ducked her head, wondering why it should matter to her.

Gerard smiled, setting the tray down on a coffee table before them, “Can I get you anything?”

“You just read my mind,” he winked, “David’s in there hogging the princess” he crossed his arms, “I swear, he just loves the limelight doesn’t he?”

Gerard chuckled, “Drink sir?” he reminded him.

“Ah yes,” he nodded his head. He turned to look at the jug Gerard had just brought in, “Just bring me a spare glass and I’ll share this with the young lady-“ he looked at Chelsea, his blue eyes twinkled, “If the lady doesn’t mind sharing”

Chelsea suddenly felt hot on her cheeks.

“N-not at all!”

The man sat next to her and waved Gerard good bye as the old man turned for the door. He returned the dress, “So, friend of the bride?” he chuckled.

Chelsea nodded her head, hating how shy she suddenly felt.

He smiled, squinting his eyes again.

“Frank Donogue,” he held his hand up to her face.

She shook it timidly, “Ch-Chelsea Brimmer” she realised how stupid it sounded for her to say her surname.

A girl came to them and set a stack of magazines down on the coffee table, “Mr. McHamley sent these for you” she said, addressing Chelsea. She thanked the her before the girl turned around and continued whatever task she was set on doing.

“Huh,” the man reached for the magazine at the top, “You must be waiting too then” he flipped through the pages, “We are the waiters, eh?”

Chelsea chuckled at the lame joke. He smiled, knowing what she thought about it.

“Can I ask you something?” she suddenly blurted.

The man looked at her.

“What do you do?”

Frank Donogue smiled an amused smile.

“I just fix people’s hair” he shrugged, turning to look at the busy crowd nearby, “though I’d prefer it if I don’t have to wait to actually do it” he said begrudgingly.

Chelsea found it endearing.

He sighed, flipping through the pages again.

“Wait,” he suddenly said, looking up at her. He reached his hand to her face and lightly touched her hair. Chelsea withdrew slightly. He laughed, “Sorry.”

He set the magazine aside, “You don’t have any plans in the near future do you?”

It was a rhetorical question.

Frank Donogue as Chelsea had discovered that day, was an expert beyond her wildest dreams. His hands were swift and yet he treated her hair as if it was as fragile as an egg tipping off the edge. His hands were amazing, like they had a mind of their own. And sometimes his hand would brush against her skin. It tingled wherever he touched; as if he had left secret trails on her skin. And he spoke to her in an informal manner, like they had been friends since forever.

And they were instant friends since that night and have been growing closer ever since...

"Deep thought"

Chelsea looked up to find Frank smiling down at her as he pulled the chair across the table.

She tried to hold her composure and smiled back to the man whose heartbeat she hoped would skip just as hers did.

"Have you ever thought to yourself," Anja turned away from the fountain, "that the world is so small, you could fit it in your pocket?"

Derek looked at her blankly, shrugging. He turned to look up at the night sky, sighing. They were at the Met then. It was an exhibition for one of the artists the Didier arts foundation was sponsoring. His parents couldn't come and his grandmother was far away in Ibruen. He had to make an appearance in their stead. He was still feeling tired from the plane journey. Flight from London to New York normally takes about 8 hours. His took less of course, courtesy of his private jet. But he also thought that a big part of the boredom was because of the girl standing before him.

If he had his way, he didn't want to see her so soon. Two weeks ago marked one month of his summer spent together with Anja in the Bahamas. He realised that he wasn't too excited then, let alone now.

He remembered to actually have had fond feelings for her earlier when they first met. But now, he thought taking a brief glance at her. He tried not to grimace. He didn't know what it was. He couldn't put a finger on it. But...it was just that she was too keen.

He had allowed himself to be flattered at first. But it was getting old. She, simply put, was getting old. He twirled the flute in his hand in contemplation. Should he rip the band-aid off while it was still safe to do so? Surely things will turn around eventually, right?

He gave her a quick once over and thought she wasn't too bad looking. In fact she was attractive. Maybe not just yet, he thought with a sigh. He wasn't too repulsed yet and besides, he didn't necessarily enjoy making girls cry.

Anja turned to him, that keen smile plastered on her face.

That marked the end of their affair.

That was two years ago.

It was a fling, simply put. But dragged too long. That month in the Bahamas was a mistake, Derek admitted. Perhaps it had misled her to think that it was more than what it really was. But he was... stupid and bored. And Anja was just there. Waiting to be picked. And he did her the honor of meeting her expectations and did just that.

He was never really into the affair. He was just, some what passive, standing in the sidelines-a bystander if you may.

Why? he wanted to whine. When he'd finally found someone like Adelaide, this reminder of an insignificant matter chose to rear it's ugly head-it was nothing but a nuisance.

Derek did hear of Anja's heartbreak after it ended. And he'd be lying if he denied that she hadn't tried everything in the book to persuade him from leaving. But the ship's sailed even before she realised anything was wrong. And he couldn't deny that he was the textbook example of a jack ass when he ended it. But truth be told, he just didn't give a damn.

Then, as he sat across Anja in that cafe, he couldn't help but feel a tad remorseful for what he had done. But only because of the prospect that this may cost him more than just injuring his ego. Something else was at stake and he couldn't afford losing it.

"Ibruen is so hot," Anja complained for the thousandth time, she looked at the people around them, "thank goodness for air-conditioning" she giggled, taking a sip of her coffee.

"Come on Anja, let's not beat around the bush, shall we?" he sighed, "Why are you here?" Derek asked impatiently.

She laughed, "Why do you keep on asking me that? Why does it matter to you?"

He had to laugh, "Are you seriously asking me that?"

Anja bat her eyes innocently, "Why yes," she nodded, "I don't understand your hostility in the matter. I am in Ibruen simply because I am in Ibruen, why is it so hard to swallow for you?"

"And I am supposed to accept that the reason you are here has nothing to do with me?"

Anja laughed, "Ah, Derek you flatter yourself," she shook her head, "I thought you of all people should be aware that there is no longer anything between us," she smiled, "No?"

Derek stayed quiet, examining her face, looking for signs that may betray her real motive. He couldn't find one.

"I am sure your grandmother has informed you that Papa is opening a branch here in Ibruen" she looked at him, "It is nothing big, just a small one for me to have a go at"

He eased up a bit, it did seem like a sound reason.

"If this is true, then why did you come look for me?"

Anja shrugged, "Nothing wrong with it, is there?" she scoffed, "Just because it ended between us, doesn't mean we cannot be friends"

Derek nodded at this. The Bolsheviks owed a great deal of gratitude to his grandfather for helping them start their business. Keeping good relations between their families was a smart move. Perhaps her grandfather had signed her up for it.

"I see you've maintained contact with Ian"

She shrugged, "We were in the same year, I don't see why not."

He'd begun to relax a bit more.

"So, your fiance," Anja grinned, "She's adorable,"

A smile broke on Derek's face, "Like you wouldn't know" he chuckled, being reminded about her first show of jealousy the other night.

"Tell me more about her."

Derek sighed dreamily, shrugging, "What do you want me to say?"

"Anything, everything..." she paused, "How is she as a person for instance"

He laughed at first, thinking if Anja had asked that a few months before, he wouldn't be able to answer. Adelaide was such an enigma, he wanted to bash his own head for not being able to figure her out.

"She's intelligent... hilarious without even trying to be," he smiled to himself, "And unpredictable" he shook his head in amazement.

Anja smiled.

"That's lovely to hear," she said, stirring her coffee.

"She's just... amazing" he sighed, reveling at the fluttering sensation in his stomach.

She took another sip.

"You've certainly changed," Anja commented, a rueful expression on her face.

Derek shrugged in embarrassment.

"Oh, look, I apologize for barging in on you like that," Anja suddenly said with a frown, "I understand why you might have felt apprehensive about it" she laughed, "It's just that I'm expecting to be very busy in the course of my stay-

"Ah yes, yes. I understand," Derek nodded, "I should apologize too for being so rude to you earlier," he shook his head, "I get really protective over Adelaide nowadays, it's ridiculous sometimes" he chuckled.

She grinned, "That's alright" she said waving it away, "Ah, before I forget," she said, rummaging through her purse, "This," she handed him an envelope, "the other reason why I'd be so busy in a couple of days"

"A Ball?"

Anja cringed, "I know, I know" she frowned, "My grandfather is very old school-and everybody else follows whatever he says"

Derek laughed, "I know the type."

"Yes," she giggled, "But I'll be in the committee, so rest assured, I'll try to make it Un-lame" she laughed, "as much as I can."

She took her phone out and stood up,

"Oh! I have to go now!"

"Wha-with who? You came here with me"

"GPS" she waved her phone, "I've got the chauffeur pick me up. I've got a lot in my plate!" she quickly trotted towards the door, "Oh, remember. Your plus one!" she giggled, referring to the invitation.

Derek laughed, nodding his head. He laid his back against the chair, feeling so silly to have been so conceited. Anja was only there by coincidence. He was wrong all along.

Derek exited the lift, flashing a generous smile at the bellboy before the doors closed. There was a bounce in his step and a tune in his head. He felt happy. Actually, relieved would be the right word. Seeing Anja for the first time after these years gave him quite a shock. He didn't quite know what had gotten into him. Somehow a whirlwind of memories hit him when he saw her. He thought about how angry she must have been since they went their separate ways and he imagined she would be spiteful and his imaginations went astray after that. He chuckled to himself thinking about it now. It was amusing because his imagination was a tad dramatic-involving cliffs, guns and Adelaide. Clearly, he had been ridiculous.

It wasn't a second later that he'd realised how quiet it was. He could hear the sound of his own footsteps, in the hall way, as if it were a clamor amidst the calm. Though the calm wasn't the kind he'd wish upon himself. There was a sense of dread in the air. And he wondered what had caused it. Maybe he was just being ridiculous again. Maybe he was just over reacting... but in the off chance that his instincts were still reliable...

He opened the main door to their suite.

The room felt dead. A silent whine came from the flat screen hanging over the fire place. He tread the floor carefully as if he might catch someone's attention by mistake. But then he thought that that was just ridiculous. This was their suite. His sanctuary.

And he suddenly realised how dark his sanctuary was. He felt the wall, reaching for the lights. He felt his heart jump up to his throat when he'd realised there was someone sitting at the sofa facing the TV. It didn't take a while for him to notice it was Adelaide.

Something within him welled up, killing away all his inhibitions. He smiled to himself, pacing quickly towards her. He landed his hand on her shoulder. As if he needed to touch her. To let him know he wasn't dreaming.

Adelaide felt rigid.

"Are you alright?"

Adelaide turned to look at him, a smile drew on her face.

"Yeah, of course I am!"

There was something wrong with Adelaide. He had spotted that right away. Her smile looked too... tried. And he couldn't ignore the high pitch in her voice.

He saw her put a book away.

"I was just reading something for Lit."

He glanced at it, "You guys are doing Twelfth Night?"

"Well... at least not yet," she shrugged, "Mr. Montgomery's planning to finish Marvell's stuff by next month-thought I better started a bit"

He smiled, "That'll make it handy later," he agreed, "I've read that one. What do you think of it so far?"

"Oh," she paused, "It's great!"

Derek frowned, catching how odd her reply sounded, "Is there something you need help with?"

She looked at him for a second. She had a different expression on her face. A rather somber one. She shook her head, looking away, "N-no, not really."

"Is there something wrong?"

She turned back to him, "I'm not really liking... what it's about"

Derek chuckled, surprised, "Wh-what do you mean? It's about love!"

"It's about deception" she corrected him.

He paused at that, taken aback for a different reason this time. "No, Adelaide, that's not really the case, it's about appearance against reality-Viola had to disguise herself as a man, you know that"

She laughed, a bit too cheerily for his concern. "Exactly."

"Nothing is ever what it seems."

"...I-I never thought of it that way," he said, thinking about it.

"So... where were you?" she asked, again with that strange high pitched voice.

He took his time examining her face. There was clearly something wrong with her. He walked around the sofa, sitting next to her.

"Are you really okay?" he asked, cupping her face in his hands.

She flinched at his touch, quickly pulling away. Her waxen smile returned the next second she was away from his hands.

"I'm fine," she turned away, tucking her hair behind her ear, "you didn't answer my question earlier..." she said staring at him.

He frowned, thinking about it, "Oh. I was with Anja," he paused, "-turns out she only wanted to catch up and..." he took out the invitation from his coat, "She invited us to a ball-

"Oh did she now?" she smiled glancing at the card, nodding her head, "that's nice... that's very nice of her," she grinned.

He put the invitation away, taking a close look at her.

"Are you sure you're alright, Adelaide?"

"I TOLD YOU I'M FINE!!!" she suddenly snapped.

Derek was really caught off guard by that reaction, he looked at her, feeling beyond bewildered. She frowned for a second, looking as if she was trying to recollect herself. Her lips pulled across her face in a tight line.

"I-I'm sorry," she feigned a laugh, "It's just that, everybody's been asking me the same question the whole day," she got up from the sofa, she started pinching the bridge of her nose, "It just gets annoying over time," she chuckled, walking to the kitchen.

"Wha-" Derek tried to choose his words carefully, Adelaide seemed very irate for some reason. He followed after her, "Uh..." he paused, "D-do you want to talk about it?" he asked softly, looking at her rummaging through the cupboards.

"Talk about what?"

"Well... something seems to bother you"

She slammed the cupboards, giving him a mad smile.

"No!" she nearly shrieked, walking past him, "No, no, no" she repeated, shaking her head.

He had to chase after her. This was his first experience, seeing her act this way. He grabbed her arm, turning her to face him,

"Adelaide," he said slowly, "What's the matter?"

"N-nothing," she said quietly, looking away.

"Adelaide," he delicately held her chin, turning her face to him, "Please, tell me."

Her eyes suddenly looked glassy. A tear fell on his hand. He could feel the heat from her face. She was upset. And he felt dumbfounded as to why.

"...Do you ever regret, knowing me?"

"No!" he quickly replied, shaking his head furiously, "Adelaide, that's insane, how could you think that?"

She shrugged, wiping away her wet face as more tears flowed, "I-I" he quickly pulled her into his arms because he knew she needed it. And he was right. She planted her face in her chest, sobbing. He felt overwhelmed, not knowing what had caused her to feel that way. And even to have such an idea... it was ludicrous.

He slowly pulled her away, wiping her tears with his own hands, "Adelaide," he called softly, "Adelaide look at me," he sighed as she flashed him her beautiful green eyes. "Listen," he stroked her cheek, "You are the best thing that has happened to my life," he kissed her forehead, "And nothing will ever change that" he kissed her, "I promise."

She nodded her head, hugging him tight.

"I love you" she whispered in his ear, sighing as she hiccuped.

"I love you too," he replied, "more than you'll ever know..."

Adelaide somehow broke into more tears. And he held her, feeling both helpless and confused. Though he knew that he needed him there. And he tried to provide just that for her. Just when he thought he could read her better, he was obviously mistaken. It really concerned him; where she conjured those thoughts from. He wanted to ask her. He really, really wanted to. But that was what he desired. He sighed in frustration, kissing the top of her head and held her tight.

The clatter of cutlery against china was once again the only sound bouncing off the walls in the Didier dining room. I sighed, moving pieces of carcass around the plate as if I was coordinating for Battleship. Derek noticed this because he patted my hand softly to stop me. I smiled, embarrassed he caught me.

Ian suddenly cleared his throat.

"Oh, something interesting happened in school earlier" he began, catching Kotoko's attention.

The old woman was downing her drink then, she raised her eyebrows.

"Anja Bolshevik came to visit us at school earlier,"

I wanted to see my plate fly like a frisbee across the table and hit him flat on the face.

"She did?" the old woman replied, dabbing her napkin against her mouth, "Well," she paused, "That was very nice of her"

'cause she's always up for niceties, I thought trying not to roll my eyes. I forced water down my throat.

"Apparently she's holding her ball at our hotel," Kotoko added, "I received the invitation this morning."

"As you expected," Ian nodded his head.

So Kotoko's mentioned it the other night? I guess I was just too distracted with my own world. I peered at Ian's direction. Brown noser, I thought disgusted.

"How come you've no knowledge of her holding it there?" Derek asked flatly, reaching for his goblet.

"Perhaps," she shrugged, "because I never really take the time to spy on my guests," she laughed.

Somehow Ian laughed along.

Derek and I exchanged glances.

Okay.

Maybe Ian had trouble with getting his face off people's asses.

"I heard you called for Gerard to send Adelaide home earlier," Kotoko suddenly said, looking at the both of us, "What happened?"

"Anja invited me to lunch," he shrugged.

"Why didn't you bring Adelaide along?"

Shit. This was starting to sound like an infidelity interrogation.

I somehow felt humiliated.

"Oh, I don't think there's anything wrong with that Mrs. Didier," Ian interjected, "They had history together, I'm sure Adelaide understands" I gritted my teeth when I saw him wink.

"Stay out of this" Derek warned, glaring at him.

"What?" Ian asked innocently, "It's only true."

"I SAID-

"Alright that's enough" Kotoko shot them both a severe look.

Derek regained his composure, sitting straight in his seat.

"I never try to stop you from socializing with your friends and I never will," she said sternly, "But remember, you are engaged now and that means you have a responsibility over yourself and Adelaide."

"Yes Obaasan, I am well-aware of that-

"Let me finish," she narrowed her eyes at him.

"What you do affects you and your fiance," she shot a look at him, "If you do care for Adelaide, I suggest you try to be more careful in the future."

I started to profusely gulp down my water as if my life had depended on it. Kotoko and Derek's banters was never something I enjoyed witnessing or be-a-part-of for that matter. I ducked my head, wishing it was possible to be like a turtle retreating into its shell.

"Adelaide, did you get a chance to meet her?" Kotoko suddenly turned to me, "I'm referring to Anja" she added, probably a response to my blank face.

"Oh," I felt my forehead crease, "Y-yeah,"I nodded my head, "Yes," I self-consciously corrected myself.

Kotoko smiled, turning to look at Gerard taking her plate away. She let the subject drop. Or she hadn't meant to ask more than that in the first place. I absentmindedly looked around, the waiters took all our plates away. It was finally time for desert.

He realised that the locker door seemed to bend outwards; it looked like it might give in if knocked the right way. He sighed, twisting the combination and as expected; letters, notes and papers of all shape and sizes fell off the shelf. He looked around the deserted hallway. Right. Covertly means of confessing. They better stop thinking it's adorable, he thought to himself, shuffling them away from his books, not caring to make a mess on the floor.

He found the book he needed for the class after lunch. He hated it if tutors decided to keep him longer than they should. Especially if it was before lunch. He set his endurance level for a set period because he knew he would be able to see Adelaide afterward. He realised how obsessive that sounded. Perhaps one had to be in his shoes to understand the feeling. He shoved the text book in his bag before closing the locker door.

He reached for his cell;

Sorry, stupid old man was keeping me.

He was going to hit the send button when someone knocked him in the shoulder. His phone fell on the floor and slid a meter away from him. He cursed, chasing after it. He was surprised when he saw someone had caught it. Adelaide stood before him, handing him his phone.

"I was just going to text you," he laughed to himself, taking his phone. He felt his stomach flutter. He didn't think he was ever going to get used to feeling so excited about someone. He hid away his smile, turning back to look at her.

He found her looking back at him, weary-eyed.

He frowned, "Wha-

"Derek!"

He looked for the source of the voice. He was stunned for a second. He was unable to move as she slithered her arm around him, "How have you been?" she went in to peck him on the cheek. He caught the unfamiliar expression on Adelaide's face over the girl's shoulder.

Derek pulled himself away from her.

"A-Anja!" he said in bewilderment, "Wh-how...how-

"I had the sweetest pleasure of meeting your fiance!" she grinned, grabbing Adelaide's shoulders in both hands. He quickly grabbed hold of Adelaide's hand, pulling her to him. He somehow felt like he needed to.

"So you have," he muttered, trying to make sense of what was happening before him.

Anja paused, looking at the both of them. She smiled, fanning her face, "Quite hot here, isn't it?"

"So the lovers reunite..."

Derek flinched at the sound of his voice. He still didn't know what was going on but he was sure that he was staring at the root of it all.

"Ian! I was just going to bring him over to meet you, I found him!" Anja said with glee.

Derek felt disoriented and hated ever bit of it. He saw Chelsea standing nearby and caught her eye.

"Would you excuse Adelaide, she's feeling under the weather,"

"Oh," Anja pouted, "Poor thing" she said sympathetically.

"Chels, if you please-

"Right ahead of you" she replied, looking quite agitated as she took Adelaide away from the scene.

"Just, adorable" Anja chirped, looking at the two leave.

Adelaide buried her head between her shoulders, as if that would make her disappear faster. The thought made his heart sink. He'd never seen her that way. He turned around,

"What are you doing here?"

She smiled.

"Is that how you say hi to an old friend Derek?" she tilted her head to one side.

"I wouldn't know, I don't have any" he sneered.

Anja's eyes squinted as she pulled her smile wider, "It is nice to see you again, Derek"

"Well," Ian interjected, "I better get to class,"

"Awwhh..." Anja whined, "leaving so soon?"

"It's okay Anja, besides," he glanced at Derek, "You two have so much catching up to do, oh and plus," he chuckled, "I've class with the future Mrs. Didier" he winked.

Derek knew it was a cheap shot but that didn't mean he didn't want to plant his fist into his skull for it. Ian waved them goodbye, the satisfied look on his face drew like a blade on Derek's skin.

Anja laughed, "Ian's so funny."

"I'll ask you again," he could feel his nostrils flaring, "What are you doing here?!" Derek repeated, thoroughly irritated.

"We should go somewhere," she said crossing her arms, as if he hadn't said anything, "...to talk, you know?"

Derek tried to hold everything within him not to strangle her. "I've a class to go to" he said through gritted teeth.

She started to break into laughter, trying to hold herself, one hand landing on his chest. He looked at her in utter confusion.

"What's so funny?"

She pressed her fingers to her mouth, "N-nothing," she shook her head, clearing her throat, "It's just..." she smiled, looking at him, "Something amused me," she pretended to shrug.

He started to laugh, "Alright," he chuckled grimly, "Honestly," he eased the grating sound bellowing from his throat, "What are you trying to pull here?"

Anja grabbed his arm, "I say we take your car... Hmm?"

I looked at my own two feet shuffling against each other on the floor. I could hear our footsteps-Chelsea's and mine in that hallway. The silence hung like a dark cloud. Creeping over us as if a pair of eyes were guiding it to follow after us. I could hear my own breath enter and escape me. As if being within me was such a redundant thing.

The day drew darker. I could hear thunder. I could see lightning, in the corner of my eye. As if mirroring what was going on in that empty hallway.

I couldn't describe how I feel.

It was a new sensation.

But it was familiar.

The second bell rung.

I turned my head to face Chelsea,

"I think... you should go"

She looked at me, blank faced. As if she had nothing to say to that.

"Chels," I eased myself away from her hold, "You should go."

She just continued to look at me. As if reciprocating the confusion I felt. But hers was different. I guess she was just clueless. A first for her when dealing with me, of course.

"A-are you sure?" it was the first time I hear her uncertainty. I was convinced she had no such emotion.

"I'll be okay" I answered mechanically.

She looked dazed, walking away. She turned back to take another glance at me before disappearing up the staircase.

By the sense of overwhelming insecurity, anger and frustration... I would say I was jealous. A second for me.

I continued my pace, trying to recollect myself.

I decided to take a vow that I would never reveal this to anyone. I was somehow embarrassed to admit it.

I started to think about how beautiful the girl was. Her hair; it flowed down like a waterfall of ice. It was blond though it wasn't too gold, not too pale either. They were real too, right from the roots. She had such a beautiful complexion. Her skin looked like ivory, with cheek bones perched high on her face. Her jawline was defined, as if it were chiseled to perfection-though it was soft enough to accentuate the whole visage. I remember her eyes most. They sparkled like sapphires. They glistened without any indication of a tear threatening to spill out of her eyes. I could only imagine achieving the same result from a cry-athon and even then, I'd say I was wishful. And she was slender, had slender fingers... legs that go on for miles. She was the epitome of grace.

I felt like my memory was incapable to serve me the exact image. She was beautiful. In the literal sense of the word.

I felt so little thinking about her. And it was hurting me. And I knew that I was supposed to stop thinking about it.

But I couldn't.

That girl...the spawn of Aphrodite herself. She was Derek's ex.

I went to hold my stomach. It was so... un-Anja.

Anja. I guess that name served her face quite nicely. She shouldn't be called anything else, I don't think so.

I felt like tearing myself up into pieces just thinking about her. Thinking about her... and Derek.

I started to think about her hugging Derek earlier. Planting her lips on his cheek. Their skin against each other. I started to think about them together. I started imagining their past. How they looked together. Must be good. They do look good. They're good together. It made sense.

And I, I barged into the picture. A sad little nobody with a stupid contract, imposing myself on him...

I don't deserve him. I shouldn't be with him.

"You finally met her."

I turned around and felt like someone should bury me whole.

"Beautiful, isn't she? That Anja"

Ian slowly paced towards me, he sighed, "And you," he peered his eyes at me, "with your middle class self-righteousness," he chuckled, "I bet you told yourself I was talking out of my ass, didn't you? That I was," he paused, smiling, "Wrong."

"Trying so hard to convince yourself otherwise" he looked at me disparagingly.

My mind screamed for me to runaway but my feet felt like they were cemented to the floor. As if the laws of gravity that had inflicted every speck of matter on the face of the earth chose to befall just me.

He stopped in front of me.

"Anja," he crossed his arms, "now she, is meant for someone like Derek." He looked at me carefully, "And I bet you think so too," he suddenly laughed, "Well," he paused, "At least now you do"

He looked at me from head to toe, "She was there first," he scoffed, walking away, "Don't say I didn't warn you." He started to laugh. And his joy caused me pain. So much pain, I might just bleed there and then...

I started to think about my family. About my mom, about how annoyed I used to get with her obsessions. I started remembering my sister's inane comments. Comments about my weight. About my face. About my existence. I used to feel so strongly about these things. And yet I held myself. With such candor I cannot even begin to familiarise myself with right now. I don't think that part of me even existed anymore. I wanted to not care. I wanted to stop feeling things. I'd give anything at that moment to relive all my past pains because they fared out better under the light compared to the torture now.

I didn't know when I had made my move. Nor did I know how, that then, I was standing before him.

Reality chose to evade me.

Because there I was, my fingers digging deep into his collar as I pushed him against the wall.

"SHUUUUUTTTT UPPPPP!!!!!"

I shook him by his collar.

"Shut up! SHUT UP!" I screamed again and again.

At the back of my head, I heard a tiny voice trying to restrain me from continuing with this. It felt like my throat was bleeding from inside and my fingers felt blistered against the cotton of his collar.

But I chose to ignore that voice.

I felt something poisonous creep into my chest, coiling up and around my heart, squeezing the life out of me.

I looked up at him, I wanted him to know that I was hurt, that I couldn't take it anymore, that I needed him to stop. I was letting him win to set myself free. I want to be free, free from feeling like I was a toy that he could play.

You win, I thought spitefully. I clenched my jaw, grinding my teeth hard, pushing them against my gum. I did this because it felt like I was about to cry. Even if I was surrendering, I would like to keep a strong face. Even if it was only a facade.

But I couldn't focus on his face.

Because my eyes were already cloudy.

Fine, I thought, trying to find someone to mentally address that to. But I could find no one. I lost, I lost at everything and I had no one to blame but myself.

I pushed him away, wiping my tears.

"I wish I could just die," I turned back to look up at him.

The expression on his face somehow made me laugh.

"I guess the one who'd be so fast to celebrate would be you, wouldn't it?" I scoffed, shaking my head. "Right now, I really do wish you were that lucky."

I decided to walk away, somehow hurt by my own words. Hurt because I meant all of it. And I truly hated myself for it.

I pushed the bedroom door open, activating the lights as I entered. I picked Misty up from the floor. She must have thought that I had brought Derek with me. She seemed less enthused when she saw that it was Chelsea who followed me from behind. I saw Dory jump off the bed, greeting us. He was just naturally friendly to everyone.

I put my bag away before settling on the bed.

Chelsea sat opposite me, Dory in her lap; Misty in mine.

We were both silent for a while as we were in the car earlier. Gerard had picked us up with the Chauffer Mr. Lyons. I wasn't that acquainted with the old man. I never had a reason to do so. I had always ridden with Derek.

"Where's Derek?" I remember asking, feeling very confused to see Gerard bowing before me.

"The Young Master requested that I come and get you, Miss." he begun to explain. He took a brief glance at me, "ah... he is, engaged at the moment," I cannot forget the discomfiture I witnessed in him at that information.

I didn't know how he had expected me to react.

I sure didn't understand what was going on. But I did choose to allow it.

So I should just let everything pan out the way it's meant to.

I ruffled the fur on Misty's head, feeling the vibrations of her content purring reverberating through her skull. I stroked her head again and again. I've heard of this theory; whereby you can transmit some kind of energy to an inanimate object when in contact for a long period of time... jewelery for instance. I wondered if the same rule could be applied with living things? I looked down at Misty, purring as she lazily closed her eyes. I wanted to be just as content.

"...you okay?" Chelsea suddenly asked.

I stared at Misty for a while. It was either that Misty had magically granted myself an ounce of her contentment or that I was just being delirious.

"Mhhmm..." I looked up at her and rolled my eyes, scoffing, "What?" I asked, returning my gaze on Misty.

"Are you? Really?"

I hummed a slow tune, holding myself from sighing, "Why would you ask such a thing?"

"Come on, don't pretend nothing happened-shit, don't pretend nothing is happening right now!"

I shot a look at her, "What? Exactly what is happening Chelsea?"

She looked at me incredulously, "How the hell am I supposed to know? There's something going on, something's up with that chick, something's going on with Derek, heck there's something going on with you but you're not letting me in on anything!"

"What do you want me to say Chels?!"

I laughed, "What? You want me to admit, that I am jealous?" I started to laugh more, "That I am insecure that my fiance's ex is a friggin bombshell?" I felt the heat rise up my face, "That I am f***ing clueless as to how i should react to his sudden disappearance? Where has he gone? Who is he gone with? What are they doing? Why hasn't he left me a message just to let me know-is that what you wanted me to say?!" I felt a cool trickling sensation falling down my hot cheek, "Did you want me to wail and complain that he might be with that girl? And if this is true, what am I going to do about it?"

I started to sob.

"What say do I have, when it has to do with his life?" I wiped the tears away angrily, "The life I stole from him!"

Chelsea enveloped me in her arms, cradling me back and forth as I tore each layer of grief; like pulling pieces of phyllo away from each other. You can never be too careful. You end up tearing a piece or two in the end.

Beauty and the Prince: Chapter 26

I don't need anyone to bash me in the head for what happened. It was my fault. I was stupid enough to wander around. But God. I can't believe I had actually let him get to me like that. I quickly rubbed the tears off my eyes, digging my fists into my sockets-as if that would help stop the tears. That asshole.

Dory looked up at me, meowing an inquiry. A flood of tears came rushing down my face and I felt stupid to sob in front of a cat. Misty suddenly jumped off the bed and ran to the door. I heard footsteps coming near. Shit.

It was Derek.

I quickly ran to the bathroom and closed the door behind me.

"Adelaide?"

I ran to the tub and turned the taps out. I heard knocking on the bathroom door.

"Are you in there?"

I cleared my throat, getting rid of the ball that was constricting my throat earlier, "Yes?"

"Oh." I heard Derek say quietly, "I'll just see you later..." he said quickly and I heard him shuffle across the room and closed the main doors.

I sat quietly, watching the steam rise from the tub. I turned the taps off, suddenly regretting sending him away. Tears continued to flow and I wanted nothing else but have him wrap me in his arms.

I didn’t remember getting out of the bathroom. Nor did I remember putting clothes on. But here I was, sitting at the dinner table, staring at my plate, not knowing what was being served. And yet I stared the food down, stared the remnants of whatever animal that had given its life to continue mine, pretending as if it was speaking to me. All this to avoid Ian’s knowing smile. Knowing. I hate to use that to describe Ian but that was the truth. He knew, that he had finally got to me.

I could hear chatter, familiar voices-Kotoko's mostly along with Ian's and sometimes if he felt generous, Derek's. I could feel the tension emanating from Derek. I know it was because Ian watched me, like a bird in a cage; taunting me cruelly. And Derek was too furious to even realise the difference in Ian's smile. It curved with the smugness of a serpent. The glint in his eyes seemed more malignant than before. The corner of his eyes wrinkled at the wonder of how he possessed something to use against me.

I felt something warm resting on my hand. I snapped out of my referree. Derek looked at me with weary eyes. A smile immediately pulled up my face.

"You okay?" he mouthed.

I nodded my head, clearing my throat.

"Is everything alright?"

We both turned to Kotoko.

"Everything's fine, Obaasan" I chirped.

The old woman smiled and turned to Derek,

"Oh right," she paused, "Derek, do you remember Mr. Bolshevik?"

Derek frowned, trying to recall.

"He does...cars with your father, mainly European..." she started snapping her fingers, "He...he helped with getting you the Porche that time? When it first came out..."

He shook his head, not getting who she was talking about. Kotoko clicked her tongue, trying to look for other connections.

"You were friends with the daughter...Anna? Tanya?"

"Ah," Derek's face suddenly turned sombre, "Anja."

"Oh they were friends alright" Ian chuckled.

My eyes were stuck on Derek's face. He wore a different expression-not the one I expected him to have. He looked... torn.

I closed the door behind me, going straight to the walk-in wardrobe. I absentmindedly rummaged through the high mountain of cotton before me. I didn't know why but I reached for the one at the bottom and the folds of soft night wear tumbled to the side. I blinked for a few moments. I chose not to care and took what I needed.

I tore my clothes off, walking topless to my bed. I flung the top part of the pajama around me when Dory hopped on my lap and meowed. I left my shirt unbuttoned, ruffling the fur on his head. Misty lazily blinked her eyes at my direction. She yawned at the sight; turned away and continued her slumber.

I just couldn't care less at the prospect of my cat staring at me with my bra generously in view. I don't think I should give it much thought. Should I even think about it? I'm alone. In a sense, despite having these companions with me, I was alone.

I felt... sad. A little angry. And... ugly.

Derek barged into my room.

And I felt a sense of happiness well up in me until the rage surged and blew it away. And I was left with a pile of sad ashes. I turned away from him, pretending I was doing this because he could see me undone.

I didn't hear him move an inch behind me. No surprise; judging from the glimpse of shock and embarrassment of catching me in my least decent state. At that moment, I thought of wanting a lot of things. I wanted to shut up and give him only the pleasure of my shoulder. I wanted to be angry at him. I wanted to punish him.

I was buttoning my shirt, profusely getting them right as if the world would end if I didn't. And I got angrier when I couldn't even do this right because my sight was clouded by tears. And I felt stupid because I couldn't even do this right.

I wanted to say that I wasn't surprised when I felt his arm wrap around me. And I wanted to say that I wasn't touched when I saw him locked his hands firmly around me. And I wanted to say that I was still angry even though he was making my heart beat skip two beats ahead the normal pace.

And I started crying because I couldn't do any of it.

He made hushing sounds to calm me. But it was strange because it only made me cry more. So he turned my face to his and kissed me. He kissed me like it was the only thing that mattered at that moment. Like everything wouldn't make sense if he didn't. And I kissed him back because I had to. Because... because I wanted to.

I felt him swipe a tear away with his thumb. He slowed down his pace and his kisses turned to pecks. And then he pulled away slowly, looking at me in the eyes.

"What's wrong?"

I bit my lip, wiping my face with the back of my hand. I didn't really know what to say. I shrugged at first. But honestly there was only one thing in my mind. His eyes stayed on my face. He was waiting calmly. It was then that I began to realise that he was getting better at it. Getting better at reading me.

"Who's Anja?"

At first he looked perplexed at that question but by the way his shoulder slackened, he looked like he had expected it.

"She was... a friend"

"Was?"

Derek looked like he didn't want to carry on but he knew I wasn't going to let it go.

"We..." he grimaced, "we dated."

It shouldn't shock me that there was somebody before me but let's just say it was easier when his past remained a big black blur with no names and faces.

He shook his head, "It wasn't anything serious," he seemed to decide then. He suddenly frowned, "I guess it was just slightly different because our families were... acquainted"

Derek looked up at me and something passed his mind. A smile suddenly lit his face,

"Are you...jealous?"

I felt my skin crawl at the word. JEALOUSY? I was somehow offended yet embarrassed at the same time.

"I-I..."

He started laughing to himself, "Wow. I never expected that from you"

"That? THAT is not what is bugging me right now, d-don't flatter yourself!"

This only made him laugh more.

"WHAT'S SO DAMN FUNNY?!" I reached for a pillow and started bashing him in the head. He was starting to annoy the hell out of me.

I could still hear his laughter muffled by the sound of the pillow hitting against his head. I was going to hit him harder when he dove at my direction, his arms securing mine against my body. I couldn't move an inch, I glared at him.

He chuckled, "I was starting to miss that look"

I turned my head away indignantly.

I heard him snigger so I turned back to face him, give him an earful or two. I couldn't do that when he surprised me with a kiss. And I could feel the smug curve on his face when I kissed him back. He knew he got me. The jerk.

"Righttt Bolshevik, I've heard of them dating" Chelsea stroked her chin as if she had found out how to solve the energy crisis. She scoffed, "Didn't expect that to be true"

I rolled my eyes.

"Meh, it shouldn't bother you now, should it?" she pointed. And I knew she was trying to make me see that I was being annoying to over analyze it. "I mean..." she looked around, "You guys are getting hitched for crying out loud"

"GOD!" I crossed my arms, "Why should that be the mark of all guarantee?"

Chelsea raised an eyebrow, "Seriously?" she sniggered, "Adds! He's giving away his youth to marry you-

"Ssh!"

She still wore that self-righteous look on her face. I sighed,

"Look... it's just that" I cringed at the thought.

"What-it's just what?"

I frowned, "Ian's... said some stuff-

"And whyyy are you even talking to him?"

I groaned, "Long story-

"Well whatever it is" she interjected, "Despite being your weird self," she said pointing at me, "Avoid him. Listen to your fiance-okay?"

"Chels! Could you stop that?!"

"Well it's. The. Truth." She pursed her lips as if she knew that I was going to lose this argument.

"Great. A world where you're right"

She preened, "I know right, isn't it just fab?"

I narrowed my eyes at her, "Are you still hanging around with Frank?"

"And why shouldn't I?"

I shook my head, looking away.

I didn't know when or why or how but Ian was sitting at a table near us. Smiling at me.

I turned back to Chelsea, wide-eyed.

"Chels!"

"I know!" she said, looking behind me.

I was already on my feet when she grabbed my hand,

"What is Anja Bolshevik doing in Ibruen?"

Beauty and the Prince: Chapter 25

Derek awoke to the buzz of the blank TV hanging over the fireplace. He blinked a few times, adjusting his eyes as he reeled in the sequence of events that had led him there in the lounge area of their apartment. The weight he had begun to realise occupying the top of his chest pulled him back to consciousness. The light snores coming from the girl sleeping in his arms made him smile. They had been watching a movie-not a very good one judging from their current state. He reached in and picked at the few stray strands of hair that probably fell onto her face in the course of their nap. He sighed; revelling at the tingling feeling he had at the pit of his stomach as Adelaide’s face caught the light.

How was it possible that I had never realised how long your eyelashes were, he thought as he saw them flutter as her eyes flitted a few times; responding to the dream that he will never hear of. And this face, he traced the back of his hand against its sides; never have I been so negligent to a beauty so rare, beauty I wouldn’t be able to forget even if I wanted to. And these lips, his hand trembled as he ran his thumb over them, I’ll swear time and time again that no other shall kiss them but me and so will my lips not meet others but these. He heard her shudder in her sleep as if echoing his thoughts, anticipating the time he’ll be able to kiss them again. How, how could one see and be so, so blind? Of the many things I’ve the chance to see-and I have seen my fair share of sights, I had let you out of mine more than the seconds that envelope a heart’s beat. A lot could happen in one heartbeat.

And in sight of this peccancy, it seems like God is showing me of all people; a mysterious sign of mercy. No doubt, that she is man’s ultimate treasure. And somehow, for some reason; he smiled as the budding sense of melancholy within him bloomed, you chose me. In this bewildering thought, he stroked her face once more, as if each one was his last. The price of falling this deep for Beauty is that the Beast shall be left paralysed at the mere thought of losing her. And the Beast is no beast to have this kind of fear. The kind of fear that degrades him for having enclosed in his chest, the heart of a mouse. I cannot lose you. He thought the truth he kept only in the confines of his mind. As if saying it out loud could prove to be the trigger for fate to turn its wheel against him. He held her against his thundering heart. I cannot lose you.

Derek was walking to the kitchen after closing Adelaide’s doors behind him. He turned the lights off as he passed the switch. He realised it was 11.30pm, still a safe hour to be awake considering he had school the next day. He took a glass from one of the cabinets and filled it with tap water. The grogginess from his nap earlier had somehow left him thirsty. He was standing in the only lit part of that open space. However the large room was still held in the light, though dim, coming from the gardens below. Instinctively he walked over to one of the windows. Leaning against its large frame, he absentmindedly scanned the darkness below. He paused. Setting his glass down on the windowsill, he made his way out of the apartment. Something interesting caught his eye.

He walked over to the garden, following the path near the lake, knowing his bearings well despite the darkness. There in the bench, third in the right, nearest to one of the three water fountains in that area sat a dark figure. Smoke floated above its head before dissolving into the night’s air.

“Couldn’t sleep?” asked the figure without turning to see who it was.

This amused him, not that he intended for his presence to be obscured, though it was amusing nonetheless to hear the conviction in the person’s voice, Even after all these years.

Ian turned around, looking at him blankly. Indifferent to see Derek there that time of the night.

“And yourself?” Derek finally replied, only to be met with a vacant look and a slight shrug before he turned back to the front, pulling in for another drag. He walked over to lean against the bench next to the one Ian was sitting in. “Didn’t know you had a taste for over the counter cigs.”

Ian paused and looked at the one in his hand, “You would know,” he smirked, as smoke escaped through his nostrils.

Derek chuckled.

“What’s a Prince like you talking to a scoundrel like me in the middle of the night? Aren’t you afraid for your fiancé’s life?”

“Not while the monster’s here in front of me, no.”

Ian scoffed.

Derek smiled, “Scriabin. That wasn’t easy to handle”

The dark haired person looked at him with distaste, “Neither is killing someone-what’s your point?”

He had to laugh at this, “Twitchy.”

Ian shot him a look, “What are you doing here Derek?”

“I should ask you the same thing” he replied, the smile vanishing from his face. “I doubt the Von Kirks’ estate is too limited back in the UK to accommodate your sorry ass, why did you have to go through all the trouble and wait here in Ibruen? Transfer schools, living in my home-

“Regardless of what it is, your conceited self would just deduce it to be about you-wouldn’t it?”

“Oh, I have good measure to justify my standing and you of all people could justify that”

A smile drew on Ian’s face.

"I just wanted to let you know, I don’t care what you do to me-

“-but don’t hurt your little fiancé?” Ian mocked, with a chortle.

Derek smiled in response to this, “I was going to say, whatever you intend on doing to her, all I can say is, never underestimate her.” The look on Ian’s face showed just how much he had not expected that. “But of course, what you said was a given,” he shrugged, “What I don’t understand is exactly why you intend to go against me,” he looked at him ruefully, “More than 90% of the Von Kirks’ establishment stands due to it being insured by Didier holdings…so the main question here is, don’t you care?”

He saw Ian clenching his jaw at that.

Derek sighed, “Ah, I think I’m going to turn in. We’ve got school tomorrow. Shouldn’t you be sleeping too?” he preened and walked away. Leaving Ian in darkness’ claws.

I looked down at my hand. The rock caught the light that crept from the crack in between the curtains. I had been awake since dawn and the first thing that caught my eyes, was the glare from the ring on my hand. And I had been awake because it felt like having the sun peak at you as you try hard to sleep. You try very hard to sleep. But how can you when something amazing was happening right next to you?

I hid the ring under my other hand, the light from the curtains landed on the back of the same hand. As if searching for that rock, as hard as it could. As if it's purpose for life was to find that rock and shine on it. Shine on it as long as it could. As long as its life permitted it to.

It's strange.

It feels like I had been a hidden rock all this time. And that someone had been looking for me. And last night that someone had put me into bed, tucked me in and kissed me goodnight.

I didn't know if this person had really done any of these things. But I think he did. And this thought is based on blind faith. Faith I never knew I had. I never knew I was capable of having. And I never expected to have.

I rubbed the rock, and noticed how natural it felt wedged between these fingers and light on this familiar hand. And realised that it was a strange thing no more.

"Good morning"

I turned to the door and smiled.

"You're up very early" Derek said, walking over to the bed and sat at the edge.

"I wager that the same thing applies to you," I chuckled, rubbing my eyes. He shook his head to himself,

"I didn't get a wink"

"Really?" I felt my mouth curve downwards, "how come?" I asked, patting the spot next to me, beckoning him to come over.

He moved closer and sat next to me, effortlessly winding his arm around me as he settled himself against the head board next to me. I looked at him, noticing the weariness in his eyes. He shrugged, smiling assuredly at me,

"It's nothing,"

"Really?"

I looked at him for a while. Knowing that his silence was for a reason. I suddenly remember him always telling me that he couldn't see through me. He couldn't read my thoughts. And I never knew why it mattered to him. Until this moment. When I, could not read his mind. And I finally understand how it feels to not know. I finally understand how it feels to care and not know what was going on in someone's mind. He didn't look distraught. He only seemed like he was in some sort of wonder. He's clocking in something in his mind and then I noticed that he had always worn that face. Whenever he had something bother him. And it was a little funny to remember that it was me he was always trying to figure out. I reached in to hold the side of his face,

"Are you sure?"

I saw him nod his head, reaching in to hold my hand in his. I saw the relief in his eyes as if I had helped relieve him of his thoughts. He kissed my palm, and looked up at me, a mischievous glint in his eyes, "I guess our nap was enough last night," his smile widened, making him squint his eyes. I had to laugh,

"You're hopeless."

He sighed, feigning defeat as he reached for both my hands and kissed them, "You make me hopeless" he chuckled. He looked down at the ring, a different kind of smile appeared on his face. The one that I remembered of despising. But at that moment, it made my heart skip a beat.

"Looks good on you"

I scoffed, taking them away, suddenly aware that I hadn't brushed my teeth. Or washed my face. He seemed to understand the reaction because he got up from the bed.

"I better get ready," he sighed, leaning in and kissed me on the forehead. I nodded my head, feeling pleased at the sight of him dragging his feet to the door as he left the room.

I felt Derek tickling my left palm. I smiled, squeezing his fingers in mine, because let's admit it; that's about the only thing I could fit in my hand. He stroked his thumb over the back of my hand. I took a glance under the table. We had been fiddling with each others' hands since we first sat for breakfast. Breaking contact when we think someone might see us, looking back for each other when the coast was clear. It was as if every inch of him longed for some morsel of connection with mine. As if we were making up for lost time. And that sounded so cliche but that was exactly what it was. Making up for lost time.

Kotoko cleared her throat from the other end of the table. I saw Derek smile at the jolt he felt from my hand.

"Do any of you possibly know where Ian is?"

I looked across the table, at the empty seat he usually sat in. The table setting untouched.

Right. I just noticed how calm the breakfast table was without Derek and Ian exchanging snide comments at each other.

"Well?"

I turned to Derek and saw his blank face.

"None of you know?"

I shook my head.

Kotoko looked away, nodding her head. Gerard walked over to her and asked if she was finished. She smiled and got up,

"You kids have a good day," she told us, walking away from her seat. She paused as she neared our seats. Derek and I stood before her, "Derek,"

"What is it Obaasan?"

She smiled wanly, "Make the effort to know what's going on with Ian"

"Obaasan" the glare from the bay windows highlighted the tautness of his jaw.

The smile stayed on her face, "Please." It was a plea. But from the way she looked at Derek, the way she held his arm and by the sound of her voice... It didn't take a genius to know that it was an order.

Derek took a step back and lowered his head. The restraint in defying her words was clear by the rigidity of his movements.

Kotoko turned her face to me and the smile she had on her face was completely different from the one she wore before.

"You look beautiful today my dear" she turned away, chortling as she walked.

Lit class carried itself in a numbingly slow pace. My chin rested on the table as I stared blankly at the board, feigning attention as Mr. Montgomery droned on about women in the Elizabethan era. In the odd times that I do this, my gaze strayed from the usual ceiling-Mr.Montgomery-board cycle. I looked around at my class mates. They possessed just as much interest in the discussion as I did.

I blew out a silent sigh, sitting myself up straight and turned passively to the side. I frowned. Confused why I was locking eyes with the one person I wouldn't want to look at even if someone were to pay me the scrapes of black gold that's left in the world. I felt my skin crawl, looking profusely at Mr. Montgomery.

Then, I truly wished I could gauge myself into understanding what the hell the professor was talking about. But I feel him watching me. Like incessant shots of sharp needles being thrown at me, slicing my skin as it failed to reach the intended target, his gaze was painful as it was persistent.

I held onto my pen, as if I could outsource the mounting tension I felt as I noticed Ian's body not moving an inch from his current position. In my peripheral, I could see the dark outline of his body and I could visualize the sly grin that permanently plastered his face.

I heard Mr.Montgomery's droning cease. I heard him clear his throat.

"Mr. Von Kirk," I felt my heart drop down to my stomach. I dared myself to turn and look back at Ian's direction. Mr. Montgomery was standing at the edge of his table, looking very cross, "Do you have anything to ask Miss McNealy?"

I gulped.

Have you ever felt the creepy sensation of being watched? Well. It felt a hundred times worst-when your instincts finally decided to be right this time.

"Anything to do with English literature?" Mr. Montgomery added snidely.

Ian chuckled silently to himself, he turned to glance at my direction before looking up at Mr. Montgomery. He shook his head.

The professor stared him down for a few moments, looking a little non-plus at Ian's response. But he decided to let it go and paced back to the front. He continued.

I could feel the cold sweat on my forehead reacting to the cool air from the air-conditioner. I wasn't really sure why but at that moment, I suddenly felt Derek's warning sinking in my skin.

I looked up from my hands, at Chelsea's blank face.

"Huh." Was all she could say in response to what I just told her.

"So... do you think I should tell Derek about it?"

She tapped her finger against the can of soda she held in her hand, taking a thoughtful slurp.

"Well..." she sighed, "I get where you're hesitation's coming from" I quickly nodded my head and after a long while, "But," she looked at me and her shoulders dropped, "Yeah. You should-for honesty sake" she nodded her head to that, "Yeah, you should."

I bit my lips and nodded my head.

I never told Derek about it. It wasn't exactly something that should surprise him. I think it isn't. And I guess, I'm sure... it should be within the limits of Derek's expectations. Yes. It should definitely not surprise him. Definitely. So when he came and sat next to me, and when he held my hand under the table and gave it a light squeeze; I smiled up at him. Because nothing was wrong. Nothing was bothering me.

I felt Derek stroke my cheek. I turned away from the window and smiled. He looked away from the empty road, looking at me, concerned. "Are you alright?"

I creased my forehead, "Yeah," I laughed, "How come?"

He shrugged taking a glance at the road before returning his gaze at my direction, "You're quiet."

"I'm always quiet"

"More than usual" he pointed, looking at me. "Are you sure you're okay?" he asked again.

I giggled, leaning in and kissing him on the cheek. He looked surprised-albeit pleasantly at the gesture. "I'm fine." I told him, patting his hand on the gear, "I'm fine."

Derek chuckled, nodding his head, "Alright, alright..." he laughed and asked no more.

I glanced at the music player and turned the volume up.

When we reached home, Gerard was already standing at the bottom steps.

"Madame is calling for the Young Master," he immediately said after opening the door.

Derek creased his forehead and turned to look at me. I shrugged, obviously sharing the same confusion. He sighed,

"I'll see you later," he smiled, before kissing me on the forehead. I blushed a little at the sight of Gerard's face when he saw that.

"Does the young Miss wish that I escort her to the suite?" the old man asked as Derek strode up the stairs. I smiled shaking my head,

"That's very kind of you Gerard but I'll be fine."

The old man nodded and bowed, "As you please."

I couldn't say I was going to get used to that kind of treatment any soon. I gave him an awkward nod and paced up the stairs and went the other direction. Derek turned to look at me and smiled before disappearing into the corner. I sighed and marched up the corridor when I paused at my tracks. I didn't quite feel like going to my room yet. And I was sure that Bertha had see to it that the cats were fed and well taken care of.

I made a quick detour and headed for the lake.

I tread the garden path with my eyes steadily on my feet. A breeze quickly passed by, bringing with it all the scents of the garden. I looked up and collected the scenic view of all the flowers blooming in the soft sun. Roses, Jasmines, Amazon lilies and the African tulips. And then the Didier lake suddenly caught my eye. And I somehow felt this overwhelming sense of guilt. And I started to panic.

I quickly paced to the tree where Derek and I had first shared a quiet night.

I leaned against the tree. The smell of all the flowers filled the air. I closed my eyes. It was calming as it was intoxicating. The drumming in my heart slowly dissipated. And I felt normal again. I opened my eyes and looked up at the empty branch. My mind wondered to that one night. When Derek sat up there and looked down at me. And he had quit pretending to like me. And I decided to tolerate him. And that was the night we both gave each other a chance. That was the night where we started to trust each other.

My chest rose higher than it normally would. My heart started to resume it's earlier speed.

Why does it feel like I had done something wrong?

I tried calming myself down again. And it helped that a gentle breeze suddenly appeared causing the leaves to stir in its sleep. And I focused on the sound of the gentle rustling they made. I felt the breeze blowing in my face, caressing my skin and pushed my hair off my shoulders. Like a friend's soothing words, it soothed me. I sighed. I didn't do anything wrong. I'm only protecting what's important to me.

"I have a slight suspicion that you enjoy seeing me alone, Miss Adelaide"

My eyes shot open. I was so glad I hadn't let a gasp escape my mouth, I quickly pursed my lips.

"Oh, don't worry. I won't do anything rash," the glint in his eyes sent shivers to my spine, "people can see." I scanned the garden and saw the guards walking past the lake.

"What are you doing here?"

A strange smirk drew on his face, "You're getting used to it aren't you?"

"What are you talk-

"What am I taking about?" he finished my sentence, "Oh, you know. The comfortable life, being a future Didier and all that" he smiled and turned to the lake, "I bet," he continued, "Being who you are, you would be quite excited, no?" he chuckled. He thrust one fist in the air, feigning victory, "Like winning the lottery huh?"

I felt my teeth grind against each other. I knew this was just one of his sick games. And defending myself in response would only bring me down to his level.

"Questioning why I am here," he scoffed, "You really look like you're comfortable on that wooden horse" he sighed disparagingly. "I would love to see the look on your face when you realise none of it is real" his smile grew into a malicious grin, "You and Derek, he shook his head, "Are from two different worlds, Miss Adelaide" he started laughing, "So far apart, it makes me laugh seeing that you think you can change that."

He smiled, "You two, are brought together only to cause each other pain"

At that moment in time, I felt like doing nothing but sink my fist into that smile, break a tooth or two. But I couldn't move. Because my chest hurt. Rather my heart did. It felt like an invisible being had stabbed me dead in the chest. And it felt like I was about to bleed. And the blood had no color and it does not escape from my heart. It was filling my eyes. I gathered all my strength and turned away.

"I wager that this won't be our last meeting, Miss Adelaide"
